Beyond The Heights of the Tallest Commercial Playground Equipment: The Highest Point of Every Country in the World
“It’s not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.” — Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first two confirmed climbers, alongside Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, to summit Mount Everest
To children, climbing to the highest point of the outdoor playground equipment is a courageous, thrilling, and confidence-boosting feat. By providing children opportunities to take healthy risks, challenge themselves, explore their capabilities, and learn their limits, you can help cultivate a sense of wonderment and pride that can last a lifetime, well beyond the years when they are satisfied with scaling park playground equipment. They may grow up to climb awe-inspiring mountains, in part, because plenty of playtime helped them believe that they could! To celebrate the spirit of adventure and the majesty of our planet, we have created a visual guide to the highest points on Earth, including the highest point in every country around the globe. Let’s start climbing!

What Is the Highest Point in the World?
The tallest mountain in the world above sea level is Mount Everest, which stands at a gargantuan 29,029 feet, making its peak the highest point.
Where Is Mount Everest?
This legendary giant that many consider the pinnacle of athletic achievement is part of the Himalaya mountain range, which divides the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau. Everest straddles the border of China and Nepal, but it is most commonly accessed via the Nepal side.
How Many People Have Climbed Mount Everest Successfully?
According to the Himalayan Database, there have been 11,258 successful Mount Everest summits, but some climbers have ascended Everest multiple times, so around 6,000 people total is a more reasonable estimate.
When Was Everest First Climbed?
The first summit of Everest was achieved by New Zealand’s Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953. Of course, this was the first known summit of Everest; it’s impossible to truly know who might have reached the highest point on Earth prior to 1953.
How Many People Have Died on Mount Everest?
As of November 2022, 310 people had died while attempting to summit Mount Everest. Everest is a formidable mountain that attracts adventurers from around the globe, and unfortunately, many have lost their lives due to exhaustion, avalanches, exposure, falls, serac collapse, overcrowding, and other dire circumstances.
Retrieving bodies from Everest is a dangerous and costly task, so many are still scattered across the terrain. It is believed that there are more than 200 bodies on Everest; some of these act as landmarks for climbers, and others have never been found.
The World’s Highest Peaks
Now, let’s explore some of the other highest mountains in the world, including the treacherous K2, which only 377 people have conquered. With an overall death rate of 13%, the world’s second-highest peak is considered the most dangerous mountain on Earth. Here are the highest peaks in the world and the countries they reign over:

- Boosts confidence and self-reliance as children set goals, take risks, and achieve new heights
- Offers natural stress relief
